Redemption of the Nations

The “nations” and the “kings of the earth” are found in “New Jerusalem” because of the work of the sacrificial Lamb and his saints .  The Book of Revelation presents images that are jarring and paradoxical, visions that do not conform to our expectations about how God works. His plans to subjugate His enemies and “judge” the nations differ radically from popular ideas. Just as his contemporaries did not understand him, so, too often, we fail to comprehend the “ slain Lamb ” who reigns from God’s throne - [ Photo by Nicola Nuttall on Unsplash ].

His Longsuffering

Between Christ’s ascension and his return, God has granted humanity the opportunity to repent before that day arrives .  In his second epistle, Peter explained the apparent “delay” in the “ arrival ” of Jesus and the “ Day of the Lord .” In doing so, he linked that day with the final judgment and the new creation. And he argued that the conduct of the church may very well “ hasten ” that day along. But there is no actual “delay” for God is merciful and has no desire for anyone to perish - [ Photo by  lucas wesney  on  Unsplash ].

From This Evil Age

The death of Jesus signaled the commencement of the messianic age with consequent changes in the status of the Law and God’s people – Galatians 1:1-5 .  In his opening statement to the Galatians, Paul declared that his apostleship was from the same God who raised Jesus from the dead, the one who gave his life to “ deliver us from this evil age .” This declaration anticipated his proposition that the arrival of the Messiah fundamentally changed the status and role of the Law for the covenant community - ( Galatians 1:4-6 -  Photo by Joshua Earle on Unsplash ).

Sons of Light

The Day of the Lord will mean salvation to the “sons of light” who remain ever vigilant and prepared for it  –  1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 .  Rather than provide a list of “signs” whereby believers can ascertain the imminence of the “ Day of the Lord ,” the Apostle Paul gave instructions on how they must live in anticipation of that day’s sudden and unexpected arrival. It would not overtake the Thessalonians because they “ were not in darkness ,” but instead, they were “ sons of light ” and “ sons of the day ”- [ Photo by pixpoetry on Unsplash ].

Final Events

In explaining the future resurrection, Paul listed the key events that would precede or coincide with the arrival of Jesus at the end of the age .  In his letter to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul outlined the events that will occur at the “ arrival ” or ‘ parousia ’ of Jesus, one of several Greek terms applied by him to Christ’s return. But regardless of which term he used, Paul always spoke of one “ coming ,” “ revelation ,” or “ appearance ” of Jesus at the end of the age - [ Photo by  Madeleine Maguire  on Unsplash ].

Last Hour

The presence of false teachers in the church demonstrates that already we are in the “last days,” and the “last hour” already is upon us - 2 John 7-8 .  The second letter of John is personal and brief, and it does not discuss the return of Jesus. Its key concern was the false teachers that were causing dissensions among believers, especially the denial of Christ’s genuine humanity. Moreover, their activities within the church demonstrated that the “ last days ” were underway even in John’s time - [ Photo by Ernesto Velázquez on Unsplash ].
